The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu: A Story of a Broken Heart

A long time ago, there was a beautiful princess named Dayang Sumbi. She lived in a peaceful kingdom in Java. One day, while she was weaving cloth, her ball of yarn fell to the ground. She asked her dog, Tumang, to fetch it for her. Tumang was no ordinary dog; he was actually a magical creature sent by the gods to serve Dayang Sumbi.

However, Tumang didn’t bring the yarn back, and Dayang Sumbi became angry. In her rage, she scolded the dog and told him to leave the kingdom forever. Tumang, hurt by her words, left her side, but before he went, he revealed his true identity to Dayang Sumbi. He told her that he was a magical creature, and he would return when the time was right.

Years passed, and Dayang Sumbi grew lonely and regretted her harsh words. One day, she gave birth to a son named Sangkuriang. As Sangkuriang grew up, he became a handsome and strong young man. Unbeknownst to him, Tumang was his father. One day, Sangkuriang went hunting and accidentally killed a dog. When he returned home, Dayang Sumbi was heartbroken and revealed the truth to him. Sangkuriang was furious and left the kingdom.

Years later, Sangkuriang returned to the kingdom, but he didn’t recognize his mother. Dayang Sumbi, however, recognized him immediately. She asked Sangkuriang to build a huge boat in one night if he truly wanted to marry her. Sangkuriang, determined to win her love, worked tirelessly to build the boat. But Dayang Sumbi was clever. She tricked Sangkuriang by making it look like the sun was rising, and when Sangkuriang saw the light, he thought he had failed. In his anger, he kicked the boat, and it turned upside down, forming the shape of a mountain. The boat became the famous Mount Tangkuban Perahu, which means "the upturned boat" in Indonesian.
